classical training techniques for any discipline

Dennis Brazeal Horsemanship

Dennis' training facility is located in Bosque Farms, New Mexico.  He takes on outside horses to start under saddle and ride, but keeps the number of horses he is working with at any one time small enough so that each horse gets plenty of quality time.  Dennis starts colts, re-starts problem horses and works with horses that have specific problems like trailer loading, working with a farrier, ground manners, etc.

Dennis puts on clinics throughout New Mexico and Colorado.  He works with horses involved in all types of disciplines.  Following is a list of horsemanship principals typically covered during his clinics:

How big is your bubble?  Does your horse maintain a respectful distance?  Why this is important and how to achieve it. What are the 5 body parts?  How to isolate the different parts and move them to achieve better control on the ground. Can you lunge your horse correctly by controlling the body parts?  How's your flexion? Why lateral flexion is so important.  How's your forward? Why forward is the crucial element to any maneuver.  Do you have an emergency brake? Combining a lateral bend and hindquarter disengagement to control your horse. Do you have vertical flexion? Can you back up?  Backing with lightness and feel.  Getting control of the shoulders and hindquarters.  Laying the foundation for mounted lateral work, leg yields and lead departures.

With Dennis, the needs of each individual horse come first.  Many folks describe Dennis' style of riding as "cowboy dressage" and that is a result of his classical training.  His riding and training techniques were influenced by his father, who was also a horse trainer and great horseman.  Dennis' son, Ty Brazeal, is also an exceptional horseman with his own training program and is known for being the first trainer to do the entire obstacle course without any bridle or neck rope at an early Extreme Mustang Makeover competition.
